4:47 Mile in High School

My only claim to fame in high school sports was that I broke the five-minute mile in track and field twice. Unfortunately, I only won one race. I was one of those guys that was decent at everything sports-wise, but never exceptional. I have many good memories of one-on-ones with friends, but nothing else competitively.

It is hard to believe I did that looking at me now, fifty-five years and fifty-five pounds later.  It is not much of an achievement these days as high school runners are pushing the four-minute mark in competitions regularly.

It is still true that most of the population has never broken the five-minute mile, though, so I am going to hold onto that.
